PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SCHOOLS
There is no longer a form for students to complete. Each year after registration, we will contact all school band and orchestra directors to confirm each student's participation.
SFYSA Co-Enrollment Policy
updated june, 2023
This policy was initially designed in combination with the standing MOU between SFPS and SFYSA in 2016. Although these policies were established in combination with SFPS, they do apply to all SFYSA students, regardless of the school that they attend, to create fair and equitable expectations for all students. These policy changes are in response to changes in SFPS district administration and to better serve the families of SFYSA and the teachers of all participating school programs.
- All students (elementary, middle, or high) that attend a school that provides a corresponding credited class (see chart below) are required to participate in their school-based program in order to participate in any SFYSA ensemble. If a student is to leave their school-based class without reasonable exception, they will at that moment become ineligible to participate in the Santa Fe Youth Symphony Association programs.
- If a student plays an instrument that is not offered at their school in a credited class, they are exempt from this requirement.
- Extracurricular clubs and uncredited classes do not qualify for this co-enrollment requirement.
- Extenuating Circumstances: In the case that a child is eligible for participation in a school-based class, but is unable to participate due to an unavoidable academic conflict, they must fill out the Co-Enrollment Exception Application and provide documentation from the school confirming the conflict. A decision will be made between SFYSA admin and an unbiased school representative (counselor, principal, district fine arts coordinator, etc.) as to whether they will be granted permission to participate in an SFYSA ensemble.
- Students who are unable to participate via the school-day class befitting their instrument will be asked to otherwise support their school music programs. This may take the form of after-school peer mentoring, concert support, participation in a different music class, etc. Qualifying activities must be approved by the above individuals, with input from the school music educator.
- SFYSA will not take part in communications regarding a student’s IEP, 504 Plans, school-day schedule, or otherwise confidential information. They will take direction from the student’s school administration, and will work in good faith to support the music programs while respecting the academic scheduling decisions of the school.
