May auditions are our primary auditions for the year.
Returning students looking to move up in ensembles are expected to audition in May.
New students may audition in May, August, or January.
For highly competitive ensembles, auditioning in May will give you priority placement.
August auditions are for new students and by invitation only.
Jazz Project will hold ALL auditions in August.
Auditions for Los Alamos Jazz Project are Tuesday, August 22 from 4:00-7:00pm.
Auditions for Santa Fe Jazz Project are Tuesday, August 29 from 4:00-7:00pm.

Eligibility
To be eligible to audition, students must:
- Be taking weekly private lessons on their instrument (if you do not currently have a teacher, please let us know and we'll connect you with an instructor)
- Be enrolled in the corresponding ensemble at their school, if such an ensemble exists. Once registration is complete, we will be contacting all school directors to confirm your participation. If there is a concern, please contact Haley Lovelace at haley@sfysa, or Callie O'Buckley at callie@sfysa.org.
PLACEMENT CRITERIA
The outcome of a student's audition is based on the quality of their rhythm, tempo choice, intonation, pitch accuracy, tone, expressive elements, technique, and scale fluency.

- the student’s audition performance
- the student’s grade/age
- the balance and instrumentation of the SFYSA ensembles
- student maturity and leadership in current ensemble
Rick lohmann memorial scholarship
The Rick Lohmann Memorial Scholarship is a merit based scholarship, which provides a full year's tuition. Students on any instrument are eligible!
To apply:
Results will be posted when placement letters go out in the week following the May auditions. This is the ONLY opportunity to apply for this scholarship for the 2023-2024 school year.

To apply:
- When signing up for your audition time, click the box asking if you're applying.
- In addition to your regular audition material, please prepare 1-2 minutes of a solo of your choice.
- Students who are not looking to change ensembles must still prepare a full audition with a solo to be considered for the scholarship.
- Know that your audition will be videotaped for assessment purposes, but will not be shared publicly.
