Lockdown learning - symphony magazine, Spring 2021 issue

SFYSA was featured in Symphony Magazine for their resilience and adaptation to making music during the pandemic in a piece titled 'Lockdown Learning'.

“When we were in-person it was, baton up … instruments up … go,” says Santa Fe Youth Symphony Executive Director Andrea Cassutt. Now conductors reserve time at the beginning and end of online rehearsals for students to talk.

SFYSA’s executive director heard anecdotal stories from teachers that they lost two-thirds of their students, though SFYSA has retained 96% of theirs.

“We didn’t miss a single rehearsal,” she said. “We had the gift of spring break to do new planning and we came back with a solid plan.”

Sunday, May 4, the Santa Fe Youth Symphony Orchestra (SFYSO) performed in a concert under the moonlight at White Sands National Monument. 

Three Los Alamos High School musicians currently play with the SFYSO. SFYSO, under the direction of Mr. William Waag, joined the El Paso Youth Symphony Orchestras, under the direction of Mr. Andy Moran, for the classical music performance.
