What is chamber music?- Chamber music ensembles are made of small groups, like quartets, quintets, and trios. It's usually a group that you do in addition to your regular ensemble since it's less time-intensive, but you can participate in just chamber music.
How often do they meet?- This year you'll have 8 weeks of rehearsal per semester (1 hour each week) with your group and a coach. Since it's such a small group, it's easier to work together to pick a rehearsal time that works for everyone. Additionally, rehearsals may take place at the SFYSA office, or at a different venue if it's more comfortable or appropriate for the given ensemble. You will get to perform on the concert series each semester!
What makes it different from orchestra/symphony?- Since the group is so small, you get much more one-on-one attention, and your part becomes much more valuable. You're the only one playing your part, so it's a perfect place to practice your leadership skills! (Participation in a chamber ensemble is a great thing to put on a resume!)
What groups will there be this year?- See below. Each year we may adjust which groups are presented, to best serve the interested students. The groups listed here are what will be offered for the 2023-2024 season.

Do I need to audition?- The only students who need to audition are those not currently placed in an orchestra/symphony.
How do I join?- Since registration has been open since mid-May, we've built the ensembles listed above based on those who have not just shown interest, but completed registration. If you'd like to join the viola or cello choirs, you have until July 21st to register, or sign up for an audition if you're not yet one of our students.
If you'd like to join an ensemble but there are no more openings, please contact Haley at the address below to be put on a waitlist in case someone needs to back out. New ensembles will be created for the 2024-2025 season.
